Better late than never.
FBI agents have arrested Vincent Asaro for his alleged role in the 1978 Lufthansa heist at Kennedy Airport in Queens, NY as reported by Josh Margolin and Pierre Thomas for ABC News: “at the time, he was reputed to be a key Mafia overseer responsible for illicit activities at JFK, long a target favored by the New York crime families because of the huge amount of cargo that moves through New York’s biggest airport.”
Asaro is “considered a ruling member of the crime family” and his “rap sheet includes 21 arrests since 1957 for crimes including rape, bank robbery, kidnapping and assault” although “the charges, in many of the cases, were later dismissed” as reported by the Daily News.
The mastermind behind the Lufthansa heist was deceased Lucchese mobster Jimmy Burke, and his plotting was portrayed by Robert DeNiro on the big screen in the film Goodfellas.
Federal authorities say they have “four cooperating witnesses from organized crime families who linked Mr. Asaro” to the Lufthansa heist as reported by Joseph Goldstein for The New York Times:
But Mr. Asaro does not appear to have grown rich from the proceeds of the crime: As late as 2011, he was recorded complaining about his take. “We never got our right money, what we were supposed to get,” Mr. Asaro said to another mobster, who is cooperating with the government. “Jimmy kept everything,” he added, apparently a reference to Mr. Burke, according to legal filings by prosecutors.
Last June the feds unearthed the remains of mob associate and suspected rat Paul Katz who allegedly was whacked by Bonanno mobsters in 1969 on the orders of Jimmy Burke, and that investigation apparently lead to today’s bust for the Lufthansa heist.
The $6 million in stolen cash and jewels never was recovered.
Four other reputed Bonanno mobsters — Asaro’s son Jerome, capo Thomas DeFiore, John Rigano and Jack Bonventre — also were arrested this morning on charges unrelated to the Lufthansa heist as reported by the New York Post.
